Creaking leather and jingling tack alerted the old priest to the presence of the travellers before they were within sight. Not that he would have been able to see them in any case unless, Araesias have mercy upon them, the Shadow Witch took an interest in them.
"Greetings, old one," a man's voice cut into the darkness of the priest's world, "we seek passage to Araetria to ask a boon of its queen."
Rheumy eyes looked up to the speaker. "Do not," his answer was a rasp, words and throat at war with one another. The pain of the Shadow Witch's curse racked his frail body as his doom once more settled about his shoulders. "Do not continue forward blindly and on the errand of a fool," the old man continued. As he spoke, his voice took on a commanding timbre whilst an unearthly light made his blind white eyes shine from within. "All who seek to enter the realm of the Shadow Witch may do so only at the pleasure of the dark Lady. Know you of her glorious name and the wondrous deeds she has accomplished in her own name?"
"We have heard some of the tales of the dark Lady's deeds, old one. Her fame spreads wide over the neighbouring lands," the man answered boldly. "Our might is our own and we will not be discouraged by such a one as you."
A ragged smile twisted the old man's mouth at the arrogance of the youngling before him. The world would not miss such a one as this whelp and his companions. "Hear, then, of the honour and glory of our Lady of the Shadows and know the majesty that awaits you; for none do pass that the Lady does not allow."
Heart in concert with his mind, the burden of his curse seemed almost tolerable as he stood, leaning upon his staff and taking a deep breath before beginning to speak the history of the Shadow Witch.
"Five thousand years, even for a god, is a long time to sleep. The first few centuries continued normally as the priestly class held faith that their god would open his eyes and dispense his wisdom and judgements as before. In the three hundred thirty sixth year of his uninterrupted slumbers, the god's priests met in a grand council of desperation in the attempt to awaken Araesias.
"The results of this conclave were many and innovative; a new calends was created and adopted across the realm. A new class of priests were ordained whose sole purpose was the study of the arcane texts dictated by Araesias before he closed his eyes to slumber. No answer was forthcoming, save new hymns composed from inspired readings of the sacred writ. The spell-songs were chanted softly in never-ending entreaty by the priests in vain hope that their voices would pierce their god's dreams.
"Nine hundred years ago, a new passage was discovered and told of other gods and the gardens they had raised from the formlessness of the universe, gardens where they could walk with companions of their choosing. The priestesses then chose dancers from amongst their numbers to cajole Araesias into returning to choose his consort from amongst their ranks. Three hundred fifty years ago, the chief priestess took upon herself the title of Chief Consort and jealously guarded the office, passing her title on to her chosen daughter.
"The office degraded over time, as is the way of corruption, and the priestly scholars of the word of Araesias began to argue openly with the decrees of the Chief Consort. In a bold gesture of defiance, the priests rode out in travelling pairs to find suitable candidates to bring into the court of priestly attendants to Araesias.
"'Once more,' the chief priest of lore and the priestess of the Celestial Choir had decreed, 'the offices of consort attendants will be filled from all the girls of the realm and not the favoured pets of the Chief Consort.'
"So it was that two hundred thirty six years ago I rode out with my companion from the citadel shrine of Araetria. Midway into this journey, my undeserving eyes first set sight upon the Shadow Witch, though she was but a young woman at the time."

I've been over at PanH today getting the sections of Vanth's story copied and pasted into yWriter in the effort to get serious about finishing it for WriYe. Like At the headwaters of Eden, the first section will be public and the rest locked to friends until the draft is completed and edited. So far, I do not have a nifty banner graphic for this story, but when one jumps out and hits me over the head, I will add it.
So far, the story has four sections written, with a word count of 2846 [put here because I just know that I will lose the post-it note with the number on it] that will not be counted as part of WriYe.
The parent story that inspired Vanth's tale is going to be rewritten from the zero point come 2010.

Today has been, other than the productively fun talk about WriYe, a bit on the chaotic side. The school nurse rang up again today. Middle beastie has pink-eye... again! Had to go collect his contagious self, trek up to see the nurse practitioner for eye drops, and then came home only to be reminded that the beastiette was at practice for Guys and Dolls [she is a doll and a hot box girl... not too bad for her 1st audition] and to collect her at 4:15. This will be daily until the play closes *see me grinning* Then! had to get milk so she could make a Russian Napoleon cake for school tomorrow, and take the Elder Beast to his driving lessons.
A bit of schedule adjustment is needed *wink*
Tomorrow won't be so bad, as supper's already made... pork stew because none of us can bear to look at turkey or other fowl after the holiday... and there will be no complex cakes to be made. And the Elder Beast is mostly grown-up that he can forage for himself in the kitchen for supper when we get home.
Now, I'm going to tank up on preventative meds and suppliments to stave off this suspicious tickle in the back of my throat, and plan to sleep in until 10 am tomorrow morning. Well, after I get the younger beasties off to school.

Because I cannot get enough insanity... although this insanity I can control. More or less... I have signed up again for WriYe 2010 after not participating for a few years. My goal is 100k [hopefully on the original fictions] and that's an achievable and challenging goal for me.
I also successfully fought the temptation to make a writing journal again, and am keeping my energies in one place and not scattered about ;)
Now, to get my notebooks in order to see what things can be salvaged and what is best served by starting from scratch.
